What is Matwork Pilates?

Matwork Pilates is a form of exercise performed on the floor using body weight and small equipment to improve strength, flexibility, balance and movement control. It originates from the work of Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, who developed the method to improve physical conditioning, posture and overall body awareness.

Today, Matwork Pilates is widely used in physiotherapy and rehabilitation, particularly for people with spinal conditions, back pain and neck pain. The exercises focus on activating the deep core muscles that support the spine, helping to improve stability, posture and movement patterns while reducing strain on the spine and supporting safe recovery following injury or surgery.

Because exercises rely primarily on the body rather than large equipment, Matwork Pilates encourages participants to develop true muscular control and stability. It also helps individuals learn exercises they can safely continue at home, supporting long-term strength, mobility and injury prevention.

What to Expect in a Class

Our Matwork Pilates classes are physiotherapy-led group sessions lasting approximately 45–50 minutes. Each class includes a gentle warm up, a series of controlled strengthening and stability exercises focused on the core and spine, and a cool-down period to improve flexibility and mobility. Exercises can be modified to suit different abilities and rehabilitation needs.

Wear comfortable exercise clothing that allows free movement — leggings, shorts or track pants and a T-shirt. Pilates is usually performed barefoot or in grip socks. Please bring a water bottle and a small towel. A mat will be provided, but if you prefer your own mat please bring it along.
